President’s message

jon HKC_0013Aloha Kākou,

Welcome to the Kava Festival & Keiki Fun Fair. The Kava Festival has been unique to Hawaii and this is the 12th since 2003. These festivals have been organized by the ‘Awa Development Council, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in collaboration with the University of Hawai’i. This year, the ADC collaborates with the University Laboratory School!

The main purpose of this festival is to promote knowledge and understanding of ‘awa with its connections to culture, science, and economics. To this end, please take your time in chatting with scientists/extension specialists at our Kava Tasting Booth, vendors, people you may befriend that have set up lauhala mats (woven Pandanus mats) with Kanoa (‘awa bowls) at hand, or avail yourself with opportunities to meet and talk with other fellow ‘awa drinkers. ‘Awa provides for a most social, intelligent, and enjoyable social interaction.clean leaf sat

We will have a very rich program for your enjoyment on October 17, 2015.  In addition to the kava-related activities, local musicians, food and beverages, we have included a Keiki Fun Fair, which includes activities for keiki and youth such as a bounce house, an obstacle course, a rock climbing wall, a petting zoo, and pony rides by Most High Jump and Nozawa’s Ark.

If you don’t want to miss anything, please come at the start, 9:30 a.m., and enjoy the entire day at ULS till 6:00 p.m.

Finally, please help support the ‘Awa Development Council through donations and purchases of the Official Kava Festival T-shirts, located at the Information Booth. Proceeds will be used to support future Kava Festivals and ULS in their mission to educate and to provide opportunities for building bridges for a better world.

I Maluhia ka Honua (So that the World may be at Peace),

Mahalo nui loa,

Jonathan Yee
